ST. BARNABAS' MINISTRIES

The following ministries that serve the larger Cortez community are available for you to participate in:

GRACE'S KITCHEN
Tuesdays and Thursdays Grace's Kitchen serves a sit-down meal.  On Saturdays sack lunches are prepared and distributed.  Between 35 and 120 persons avail themselves of these services each day.  You may participate by helping deliver food from donors to the church, preparing food for cooking, cooking, serving, providing hospitality to our patrons, or cleaning up.  Call the church (565-7865) to let us know you'd like to help.

GOOD SAMARITAN CENTER
Good Sam's is a free-standing resource center for individuals and families facing crises.  It was begun by St. Barnabas and is administered by our retired deacon.  It is now funded by grants and donations, in part, from St. Barnabas.  Good Sam's distributes food, clothing, household items, and some limited financial aid to those who qualify.  If you would like to help call 565-6424.

LIMITED FREE MEDICAL CARE
Limited Free Medical Service at St. Barnabas is available on most Thursdays 1- 2 p.m. This is provided for persons without ability to pay for basic primary care needs, ordering of tests, or referrral to a specialist or other health care providers. Office procedures and OB-Gyn care not available. Appointments are made through Dr. Robert Heyl's office - 565-4436.   If you would like to help with child care for patients during their visit, training is required first.  Call the church (565-7865) to inquire.

THANKSGIVING DINNER
This is just what it sounds like - a giant community meal open to anyone.  You may participate by helping prepare food, cooking, serving, or cleaning up.

ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM
This is a gathering of parish members who are are concerned that St. Barnabas function as sustainably as possible.  The team reports to the vestry (the council) in an advisory capacity.  To participate call the Rector.

The following ministries are more internal.  They are ways to serve the St. Barnabas church family:

ACOLYTES
Acolytes carry torches or the processional cross and help the priest at the altar.  Following training, anyone over the age of 8 may serve.  If you are interested, talk with the Rector.

LECTORS
Lectors read the scripture lessons during Sunday worship.  They may also lead the Prayers of the People.  All ages are welcome. Because this is such a visible ministry, it is expected that the lectors will have good reading skills and will practice during the week preceding the Sundays they are scheduled.  To participate call the office (565-7865).

ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary for worship.  They work in teams as they take turns setting up for Holy Communion, caring for the linens, and overseeing the decorations for special occasions. Some members enjoy baking the altar bread.  Everyone is invited to be trained.  Call the office if you are interested (565-7865).

NURSERY
Those in the nursery care for our children who are toddlers up to kindergarten.  It is hoped that every person in the congregation will take a turn in this most important ministry.  Training consists of completing Safeguarding God's Children.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our Sunday School teachers work with children from Kindergarten to fifth grade using the Godly Play curriculum.  They serve with an experienced teacher until sufficiently prepared to teach on their own.  Their training includes Godly Play and completing Safeguarding God's Children.

YOUTH GROUP
The Youth Group is for our kids from fifth grade through high school.  Planning is done as a team.  Training includes completing Safeguarding God's Children.
